Why I Loved Donald Trump’s United Nations Speech

Sometimes people speak with such clarity that it cuts straight through the politics and political correctness of the world. Donald Trump accomplished this brilliantly in his second speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. 

Throughout his speech, Trump made it clear that America was for itself and for the world. But that America had no interest is subjugating herself to the philosophy of globalism that would seek to diminish America’s sovereignty. President Trump said, “Each of us here today is the emissary of a distinct culture, a rich history, and a people bound together by ties of memory, tradition, and the values that make our homelands like nowhere else on Earth.” How refreshing to admit that distinct cultures and homelands exist. Such a clear, fantastic and anti-globalist statement!

Here’s another great quote from his speech:

“We are standing up for America and for the American people and we are also standing up for the world. This is great news for our citizens and for peace-loving people everywhere. We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable, global bureaucracy. America is governed by Americans. We reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism.” In other words he was saying,  “I’m sorry, but I’m NOT just a citizen of the world controlled by the decisions and whims of people no Americans voted for. BUT we’re more than happy when America’s success spills out into the world and makes everyone better.”

This entire idea is irksome to globalists who want nothing more than to erase national sovereignty and cultural identities.

It has been interesting to read various “news” reports about Trump’s speech – most pointing out a moment when there was some laughing and some applause. The media characterized the moment as “mocking” Trump. But Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (and who knows that group of people at the UN very well) says that the laughter was a result of the unexpectedness of Trump’s honesty. Yes, apparently speaking directly and without the filter of political correctness or faux diplomacy is surprising, unsettling and laughter inducing. Ambassador Haley relayed that behind the scenes, people were “falling over themselves” trying to get pictures with the president. Of course the media twists it into something that it’s not. Color me unsurprised and uninterested at this point. 

So, in case you missed it, here are some of the best takeaways from Trump’s speech:  

• The U.S. (under Trump’s leadership) is not going the way of globalism. 

• The U.S. will not participate in deals that aren’t good for America. 

• America isn’t going to dictate other nation’s traditions, beliefs or customs, and he wants the same respect for the U.S.

• Mr Trump emphasized “principled realism:” Moving the US embassy in Israel to its capital, Jerusalem, is just recognizing the obvious. 

• When America takes care of her own interests, it’s good for the world. A world where America is strong is safer for everyone. 

• The U.S. military is going to be stronger than ever. 

• Fair trade is going to happen. 

• And Iran needs to knock if off: “Iran’s leaders sow chaos, death, and destruction. They do not respect their neighbors or borders, or the sovereign rights of nations. Instead, Iran’s leaders plunder the nation’s resources to enrich themselves and to spread mayhem across the Middle East and far beyond.” 

We are definitely living in a “pocket of time,” and there is no determining how long this period of concentrated and aggressive protections of liberty is going to last. God, being God, uses whomever He wishes to accomplish His plan for humanity. He will even use people, events and trends to provoke the next chapter for humanity and the fulfillment of prophecy.

Oh, it’s not that I don’t know or understand that globalism is coming. I do. It’s just that before it gets dark, I want the light to shine just a bit longer and for more people to have the opportunity to live bigger, better and more meaningful stories. Stories that reflect the Light of Jesus and tell the story of Light. All I’m saying is that whatever is happening now is not going to last, so pay attention and “make the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16)
